Tab Content goes hereAt the end of the Turkish domination era, the Elementary School of Mosfiloti operated in the “Synodiko” (kind of a meeting room) of the Agia Thekla Monastery under the name ‹‹Hellenic School››.
The School was a regional one and it was attended by about fifty children from the villages Mosfiloti, Sia, Kornos, Pyrga, Psevdas, and Agia Anna. Among others, Nikolas Chiotis from the island of Chios, Antonis Efstratiou from Pyrga, Emmanuel Christofidis from Lympia, the teacher Chrysostomos from Agia Varvara, and Constantinos Kypraios and Ioannis Kasoulidis from Nicosia taught in it. This fact was ascertained through a sign that existed on the door of the Monastery’s old “Synodiko”, part of which was destroyed.
Some books dating back to 1907 are extant in the Elementary School’s library. Based on the school register of 1907-1908, which was completed by the -then -teacher Ioannis G. Kasoulidis, the main occupation of the inhabitants during that era was agriculture. Because receiving education in the Elementary School was not mandatory, several pupils did not complete their studies, being compelled to assist their parents with their agricultural tasks.
Based on another book that mentions the inspections that were done each year, on 28/02/1907 there were 30 male and 9 female pupils, 25 from Mosfiloti and 14 from Sia, with Georgios Spyrou as the chairman and Eleni Georgiou -a girl’s school graduate -as the teacher. The students were taught reading, writing, grammar, arithmetic, and religion studies.
The school continued operating in that same area until 1914, when the Elementary School of Mosfiloti was established.
The school was housed in an old building belonging to the “Agia Marina” church and -because of the increasing number of students -from time to time various community halls were also used. In the village there also was a house that was granted to the teacher, whom the village appointed. This was done because means of transportation were non-existent.
With the onset of the EOKA National Liberation Struggle in 1955, the operation of the School in the same building it is today also started. On that day the Greek Flag was raised.
The school commenced its operation with the two older halls, then making the necessary additions so as to serve the increasing needs of the community.
After the events of 1974, the number of the school’s pupils increased significantly due to the large number of refugees that settled in the community, in a self-help settlement. In the school year 2003-2004 a total of 113 pupils attend the school with 10 teachers working in it.
National Action
When the Italian fascists sunk the Greek destroyer “Elli”, the Elementary School along with the Nationalist Association organised a fund raiser and -through the Greek Consulate -sent a large amount of money to the suffering Greek nation.
With the onset of the EOKA National Liberation Struggle of 1955 the Elementary School placed its powers in the service of the organisation’s holy cause.
Administratively, the Community of Mosfiloti belongs in the Larnaca district, though in terms of education it comes under Nicosia. Its School Board and its transactions / records are administered by the Community Council, the President of the Community Council also being the Chairman of the School board. The Mission of the School Board -and the Community Council -is to deal with the serious problems that concern the Elementary School and to handle the money given by the Ministry of Education. The Parents’ Association as well as the Teachers’ Association provide for the pupils’ welfare.
The School has a fenced soccer field and a Basketball court.
Events
At the end of every school year a ceremony for the graduates of the Elementary School takes place. It is worth noting that on the 13/07/89, during the graduation ceremony, the pupils successfully staged the play “Troades” by Evripides with the aid of the teachers Loukas Prastitis and Dimitris Pogiatzis.
Regional track-and-field events are organised at the end of every school year, all the athletes from the Elementary Schools of the region participating in them.
In the National Anniversaries -like those of the 28th of October or the 25th of March -students’ parades are conducted with one of the region’s communities undertaking their organisation each time.
Every year on Palm Sunday the Parents’ Association organises a bazaar, and the proceeds from it are used for the needs of the School’s pupils.
